Lab Updates
The latest updates, publications, and announcements from the MPS Lab.
Our lab is proud to celebrate the achievements of our PhD students as they embark on impactful industry internships this summer.
Kaustubh Harapanahalli and Vinayak Sharma have joined Anton Intelligence LLC as PhD AI/ML Interns, where they will be applying their deep research expertise to real-world solution development challenges. Concurrently, Atharva Khedkar has started a position as an AI Research Intern at AGI, Inc., working on compiler optimization for edge inference.
We look forward to seeing the incredible insights and innovations they bring back to the lab following their industry experiences!

This week, our lab, in collaboration with Rio Salado College, hosted the AI & Semiconductor Summer Institute, 2026. Sponsored by Intel and the National Science Foundation (NSF), this immersive program focused on empowering K-12 educators to navigate the complex nuances of Artificial Intelligence and connect them directly to semiconductor industry investments. Our goal was to provide teachers with the tools and knowledge necessary to help their students discover and pursue high-growth career pathways in these cutting-edge fields.
KJZZ 91.5 FM covered the event, and an article highlighting the program was published. Read more about the event coverage here: Link

Dr. Aviral Shrivastava delivered a keynote on “Practical Quantum Machine Learning” at the ACM SIGPLAN Conference on Languages, Compilers, and Tools for Embedded Systems (LCTES 2026), held in conjunction with PLDI. Addressing the severe hardware noise and vanishing gradients of the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era, his presentation introduced Quantum-Projected Metric Learning (QPMeL). This paradigm-shifting approach bypasses current optimization bottlenecks by reframing QML entirely as a metric learning problem. By shifting training optimization to classical computers and eliminating noisy entangling layers, QPMeL requires just two gates per qubit—exponentially improving hardware scaling while achieving state-of-the-art multi-class accuracy.
